Writing, Ranting & Love At First Sight

I was very honoured to be the first guest on my chum Dan Alatorre‘s new show, Writer Rants, to talk about PorterGirl books First Lady Of The Keys and The Vanishing Lord. Here are some edited highlights; whilst almost two hours of Daniel talking about how great I am might be good for my ego, no one really wants to listen to that. But what you might want to listen to, however, are insights into how I built up the Old College world and developed the characters, the truth about what really happened at Cambridge University and how I fell in love at first sight at the Royal Opera House…

This was fun, Lucy – and I finally got the correct pronunciation of Alatorre (3 syllables). I see Porter Girl more as a series on TV, btw, than a film – it fits the “tune in next episode” way you always left a “hook” in your blog articles.

I must disagree that you are not “good enough” to write scripts. You are most certainly good enough to do whatever style you decide to embrace. HOWEVER, for this reader anyway, it’s the clever commentary that makes your style unique, and I’m not sure how you would translate that to dialogue. Different way of writing altogether.

THIGHS? I didn’t realize that Brits were so fond of shorts! 🙂

I only relatively recently learned how to pronounce Alatorre! It’s Spanish, apparently. Pretty name. I agree with you about the TV series – I have carefully developed the ‘cliff-hanger’ endings to first my blogs, then chapters and finally books – it’s sort of a PorterGirl thing. It would be far better if a proper screenwriter wrote it, perhaps with my input on certain things, as it really is a different discipline. Only the best for Old College!
It seems that thighs really are a big thing over here!

Not uncommon for the book writer to “consult” with the script writer (or writers, with TV), kicking around ideas about the best way to translate from the original format. Otherwise, they buy your IDEA and run away with it.

Since you have already planned a series, I know you’ll be careful about signing away your rights.

I have managed to hold onto 100% intellectual property of PorterGirl thus far and I don’t intend to give that up easily! Priority for now is get the next book written, out and promoted… then a proper, big holiday before I consider anything else! It was only 2 years today that I first self-published Secret Diary Of PorterGirl. Only 2 years! That’s a lot of work in a short space of time – two professionally published books, blogs, all sorts. This girl needs to put her tootsies up!

You are certainly on one of the fastest tracks I’ve ever read about!!! Tootsie time has been earned and MUST be taken.

Well, I don’t know about that. I’ve got a nice top on though.
