Being a writer is an interesting thing. Sometimes. A lot of the time, it’s a bit dull, if we’re honest. There’s a lot of editing, reworking, rejection and screaming into the void. Even the actual writing bit can be a bit onerous, sometimes – sat on your own, forgetting to eat and wash, surviving on cups of tea. But sometimes, being a writer is brilliant – sometimes, people really like your work, want to talk to you about it and you get to spend evenings reading and discussing postmodern insect erotica with two gentlemen you met on the internet! This is hands down my favourite experience of being a writer so far. Writing a guide to James Joyce classic Finnegans Wake seemed like an insane undertaking at the time, but the near-fanatical amount of effort was well worth it, as years later my work is bringing me new friends and the opportunity to discuss at length the sexual proclivities of a grasshopper.

I was invited back to join Toby and TJ on the WAKE! podcast, where I was given the honour of joining them for Episode 3.1. My apologies to Neil, who apparently really wanted to be in on this one. And no wonder – this episode if full of filth and fury, japes and jokes and some of the finest insults in English literature (very much my sort of thing). I’ll pop a link up when it’s available, but in the meantime you can find out more about the podcast, Toby & TJ and listen to my previous appearance here –
